F1 vs Fleece Multigen Groodles: What’s the Difference and Why It Matters

If you’ve started researching Groodles (also known as Goldendoodles), you’ve likely come across terms like F1MultigenFleece coat, and even Ultra Groodle. With so many buzzwords floating around, it can be hard to know what they really mean—or what’s best for your family.

At Fairview Park Groodles, we believe in demystifying these terms and helping you make informed decisions. Let’s break it down.

What is an F1 Groodle?

An F1 Groodle is a first-generation cross between a purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Poodle—usually a Standard Poodle for sizing consistency but someetimes smaller. These pups often inherit a beautiful blend of both parent breeds. They’re typically fluffy, friendly, and smart.

F1 Groodles are extremely popular, and with good reason—they’re adorable! But here’s the catch: coat, size, and shedding can vary significantly between siblings, making it harder to predict what your pup will grow into. Additionally the smallest size that can be achieved with an F1 litter is mediums, and they will generally edge towards standard sizing. This is becuase one parent is always a golden retriever and golden retrievers are big dogs!

What is a Fleece Coat Multigen Groodle?

Multigen Groodle (short for multi-generational) is a Groodle bred from two Groodle parents—or sometimes a Groodle parent crossed back to a Poodle or Retriever for specific traits. A fleece coat multigen Groodle is bred with intention to create a soft, low-shedding coat and maintain that classic Groodle look.

In particular, we focus on fleece-coated, high-percentage Golden Retriever multigens. These pups often look nearly identical to F1 Groodles—sometimes even more “retriever-like” in appearance, sometimes with a higher percentage of golden retriever, with soft as soft coats —but with more consistency in coat, size, and temperament.

Why Choose a Fleece Multigen?

While F1s are lovely, they come with more genetic variability. A carefully bred multigen gives us the ability to:

  • Achieve a reliable fleece coat with lower shedding qualities
  • Are available in all sizes
  • You can predict adult size more accurately
  • Ensure consistency across litters, which helps match the right pup to the right family

Ethical breeders also limit how many litters a Golden Retriever can have—at Fairview Park our litter numbers are capped at four. That means F1 pups can only be produced a limited number of times from any one Retriever mum.

Also like you, we breed groodles because we love the breed. While Golden Retrievers are amazingly beautiful as well, we as breeders want to own groodles for the same reason you do!

By continuing our lines with thoughtfully chosen multigen pairings, we can maintain the health, quality, and temperament we value, while producing pups that look, feel, and act just like their F1 cousins.

What About “Ultra Groodles”?

You might have seen the term “Ultra Groodle” popping up in breeder marketing. While it sounds flashy, it’s not a recognized or meaningful genetic classification. In most cases, it’s simply another term for a high-quality multigen Groodle bred with intention.

At Fairview Park Groodles, we don’t rely on gimmicks. Our focus is on health, temperament, predictability, and matching each family with the right pupp.

The Bottom Line

Whether you’re considering an F1 or a fleece multigen Groodle, the most important factor is your breeder. A responsible, experienced breeder:

  • Has clear goals for temperament, coat, and health

  • Understands genetic pairing

  • Provides lifelong support and ethical care standards

  • Offers transparency and testing for their dogs

When bred with care, a fleece multigen Groodle can offer all the qualities families love in an F1—with even greater consistency.

And the answer to which puppy is which? Lottie is a multigen fleece groodle bred by our friends at Apache Park Groodles and Bernedoodles and Mabel is  a F1 groodle bred by us. Both of these fleece beauties will be  future parents in our breeding program once old enough, allowing us to produce gorgeous fleece multigenerational groodles.
